Second: Dogtooth. This Greek film from director Yorgos Lanthimos may not have the general appeal of ‘A Prophet’, but really good. Think Michael Heneke directing a Wes Anderson script? I may be off base. Overprotective parents keeping their children locked up in a walled compound, dark, funny. Another winner at this year’s Cannes (Prix Un Certain Regard).

This is the trailer for Stairway to Heaven, a short film (bike porn) about a race organized by Takeover LA. The trailer is tight. The short could have been …uh shorter. It has it’s moments and a good soundtrack, but it starts to drag at parts. Not sure about the jumping from B&W to color back to B&W. Is that an artistic choice? Recap: B&W and shorter.

What’s not to like about this video from Belgian/Congolese rapper Baloji? He samples heavily from fellow Congolese group Konono Nº1 and the footage (shot around Kinshasa) nods heavily towards Muhammad Ali’s “Rumble in the Jungle”. I guess the album was supposed to come out January 27th…. but I guess it’s been pushed back? Dunno.

Guy Tillim
So….not to come across as a cheapskate, but I found these photos by South African photographer Guy Tillim at the Daimler Art Collection’s website. Really haunting & beautiful portraits of child soldiers in Sierra Leone from 2001 (you can view more from his collection here). But here’s the kicker: for some reason Daimler decided to post them as 8”x10”, 360dpi....

Plural
So I was having a conversation today with my friend Morgan about Chicago designers and she mentioned Plural. I hadn’t heard of them before, so she sent me their link. I really like their work, not a huge fan of the site’s interface…but whatever. Above is a poster they did for one of my favorite bars, The Whistler, that is responsible for many lost memories.

Dennis Hopper Photos '61-67
Not sure who does pricing over at Taschen….but they’ve just released a book of Dennis Hopper’s photos throughout the 60’s. I think $700 is a little pricey, but maybe Barnes & Noble has a display copy that we can casually leaf through. Also, I watched Hearts of Darkness the other night, the documentary about Coppola attempting to make Apocalypse Now… Jesus!...

Penguin Great Ideas
Penguin Books has a four part series titled “Great Ideas”. The goal of the series is to publish special editions of books that presented ideas that somehow changed the course of history. Some great covers too, but I guess that’s Penguin’s thing, right?

Print Liberation
I just bought a shirt from Philly based Print Liberation. Browsing their site has inspired me to clean out our own screen printing studio in the basement…it’s fallen into disrepair (maybe tomorrow). I should also plug their book which is a great primer on silk screening. You can buy some tees or the book at their site here.

Paco Pomet
Sesame Street & Somalia?… Obelix & Shantytown?…Spanish artist Paco Pomet creates absurd (and sometimes amusing) worlds from reimagined current & iconic photos. Supposedly, his oil paintings are massive and these images may not do them justice.

I’ve written about Kelly Meador & Daniel Elwing before, the Portland based duo go under the name Impactist. Music, film, motion graphics, short stories, photos, print….they do it all. They’ve just released a short titled “Hello Neighbor”, which features music from their Hello Neighbor EP. Since the EP is a download only and would probably be listened to on an iPod...
