Nuit Blanche
Director Arev Manoukian & Toronto based Spy Films created this amazing short….not so much for the idea, but more for the execution. Manoukian pulls out all the punches: super over-cranked footage, beautiful compositing and an imaginary noir world.
You can watch it here and then jump over to the “making of” here.

Josef Schulz alters photos of corporate signage and makes them generic & lovely.

What’s not to like about this video from Belgian/Congolese rapper Baloji? He samples heavily from fellow Congolese group Konono Nº1 and the footage (shot around Kinshasa) nods heavily towards Muhammad Ali’s “Rumble in the Jungle”. I guess the album was supposed to come out January 27th…. but I guess it’s been pushed back? Dunno.
You can go to Baloji’s site here.

Snapshots from Vancouver photographer Grant Harder. You can view more of his portfolio here.

Ryan Fleck gets an A+ in awesome class: Half Nelson, Aces. Sugar….F-ing amazing. Seriously, I don’t even like baseball.
ps -Don’t watch the trailer, it’s misleading.
The Guardian posted a film about fishermen in Belgium that utilize a 500 year old tradition of trawling for shrimp on horseback.

So….not to come across as a cheapskate, but I found these photos by South African photographer Guy Tillim at the Daimler Art Collection’s website. Really haunting & beautiful portraits of child soldiers in Sierra Leone from 2001 (you can view more from his collection here). But here’s the kicker: for some reason Daimler decided to post them as 8”x10”, 360dpi. Great! More than adequate for a high quality print, right?

Or you can put them on one large 20”x30” print and use archival paper/inks. Everyone likes a grid:

Anyway, you can find the high-res images here (scroll down a bit).
Note to Mr Tillim: I apologize, you are very talented. I don’t want to steal your work, but I am. Your photos are amazing and I want to own one. I wish more things like this were available online.

I was browsing through Fresh Tripe’s site and saw this. So classy.

Some Canon 5D footage using a 65mm macro lens. Shot by Clemento Wirth. Pretty.

So I was having a conversation today with my friend Morgan about Chicago designers and she mentioned Plural. I hadn’t heard of them before, so she sent me their link. I really like their work, not a huge fan of the site’s interface…but whatever. Above is a poster they did for one of my favorite bars, The Whistler, that is responsible for many lost memories.

Not sure who does pricing over at Taschen….but they’ve just released a book of Dennis Hopper’s photos throughout the 60’s. I think $700 is a little pricey, but maybe Barnes & Noble has a display copy that we can casually leaf through. Also, I watched Hearts of Darkness the other night, the documentary about Coppola attempting to make Apocalypse Now… Jesus! Hopper was out of his mind.
In case you have an excess of money, you can buy the book here.
