Second: Dogtooth. This Greek film from director Yorgos Lanthimos may not have the general appeal of ‘A Prophet’, but really good. Think Michael Heneke directing a Wes Anderson script? I may be off base. Overprotective parents keeping their children locked up in a walled compound, dark, funny. Another winner at this year’s Cannes (Prix Un Certain Regard).

But this week was just phenomenal. Seriously. First: A Prophet (Un Prophète). Jacques Audiard’s prison/mob epic (2 1/2 hours) was f-ing amazing. The film follows an 18 yr old Algerian and his ascent in the French prison system over 6 years. It won the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes and was nominated for Best Foreign Language at the Oscars (but lost, blah). I am serious: watch this movie.
