Mr Oizo directs “Where’s the Money, George?” an uncompleted film featuring Pharrell Williams. It seems the Oizo doesn’t intend on finishing it, though. Too bad… judging from the excerpt I would most definitely rate this as one of my fav puppet/crime dramas.

Second: Dogtooth. This Greek film from director Yorgos Lanthimos may not have the general appeal of ‘A Prophet’, but really good. Think Michael Heneke directing a Wes Anderson script? I may be off base. Overprotective parents keeping their children locked up in a walled compound, dark, funny. Another winner at this year’s Cannes (Prix Un Certain Regard).

I don’t write about movies I don’t like, so I don’t write about too many movies. But this week was just phenomenal. Seriously. First: A Prophet (Un Prophète). Jacques Audiard’s prison/mob epic (2 1/2 hours) was f-ing amazing. The film follows an 18 yr old Algerian and his ascent in the French prison system over 6 years. It won the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes and was nominated for Best Foreign Language at the Oscars (but lost, blah). I am serious: watch this movie.

This is the trailer for Stairway to Heaven, a short film (bike porn) about a race organized by Takeover LA. The trailer is tight. The short could have been …uh shorter. It has it’s moments and a good soundtrack, but it starts to drag at parts. Not sure about the jumping from B&W to color back to B&W. Is that an artistic choice? Recap: B&W and shorter.

Director Arev Manoukian & Toronto based Spy Films created this amazing short….not so much for the idea, but more for the execution. Manoukian pulls out all the punches: super over-cranked footage, beautiful compositing and an imaginary noir world.
